DEPLOY: Interactive Systems with TouchDesigner

An intensive introduction to designing, developing and producing interactive installations with TouchDesigner.

/ Upcoming workshop

From a TouchDesigner prototype to a functional interactive system.

Production starts on day one. Over 5 sessions we will work through the complete cycle of an interactive installation: technical brief, scope, feasibility, prototyping, budgeting, sensor and hardware testing, planning, setup and operation. Every exercise incorporates real production decisions and testing with professional hardware in the lab.

/ Program

5 intensive sessions

Day 1

Concept, Scope and Feasibility

Defining the idea, audience, interaction journey and success criteria; preparing the technical brief, functional scope, constraints, risks and preliminary budget.

Interface, node-based workflow and operator families in TouchDesigner: TOP, CHOP, SOP, POP, DAT, MAT and COMP; building a first prototype to validate the interaction and its technical feasibility.

Day 2

Visual Prototype and System Design

Visual language, resolution, aspect ratio, output formats, content and performance targets; the relationship between creative decisions, equipment, schedule and cost.

2D visual composition, 3D environments and control through data and parameters using native TouchDesigner components; modular organization to build a measurable, testable system.

Day 3

Sensors, Hardware and Integration Testing

RGB cameras, OpenCV, MediaPipe, LiDAR, OSC, MIDI and microcontrollers; comparing range, latency, stability, cost and availability to select the appropriate hardware.

Input, cleanup and normalization of data in TouchDesigner; integration testing through OSC, Spout and NDI, risk tracking and an overview of how Unreal Engine, generative AI and other tools can interconnect.

Day 4

Technical Planning and Production

Spatial survey, mockups, plans, signal, data and power diagrams, equipment list, detailed budget, estimate and production schedule.

Defining the final architecture: resolution, frame rate, formats, networks, outputs and performance; setup and strike plan, roles, vendors, logistics, safety and contingencies.

Day 5

Setup, Operation and Delivery

Setup and strike planning, installation, calibration, testing, operation checklists, maintenance and delivery documentation.

Optimization, auto-start, show control, monitoring, backup and troubleshooting; guided setup with professional hardware in the lab.
